Dounreay is an area of Caithness most famous nowadays for the nuclear power establishment started in 1950.   It stands near the site of a 16th century castle fomer seat of the lords of Reay.  It was a small three storey L plan tower house.  the sphere at the power plant became operational in 1959.  The complex has grown especially in the 1960's and 1970's.  An exhibition centre lies outside the main complex and is open to the public.  New Dounreay Gallery Pictures 22 February 2002
