 Additional Information

     The Returning Officer for the three Highland constituencies is Arthur McCourt, Chief Executive of The Highland Council.

     His three Depute Returning Officers are:- Caithness Sutherland and Easter Ross:  Graeme McLaughlin, Area Manager, Sutherland;  Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey: Alister Paterson, Area Administrator, Inverness; Ross Skye and Lochaber: John Bruce, Elections Manager.

     Polling will take place on Thursday 5 May between 7 am � 10 pm.

     There will be a total of 566 staff employed at 283 polling stations in the three constituencies � 76 in Caithness Sutherland and Easter Ross; 99 in Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey; and 108 in Ross Skye and Lochaber.

     The deadline for postal voting, postal-proxy voting and voting by proxy was 5 pm on 26 April. 
The number of applications accepted by the Electoral Registration Officer across the three constituencies are:    Postal � 12,098; postal-proxy � 76; proxy � 616.         
The breakdown is:
Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross, 2,878 postal; 6 postal-proxy and 142 proxy;
Ross, Skye and Lochaber, 3,262 postal; 15 postal-proxy and 201 proxy;   
Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, 5,958 postal; 55 postal-proxy and 273 proxy.
The total number of postal applications across the three constituencies at the General Election in 2001 was 5,684.  The number of valid postal votes cast was 4,625.

      The estimated cost of administering the election in the three constituencies is �250,000.

Ross Skye and Lochaber 

Electorate: 50,351

Area: 12,779 sq km.

Boundary: The constituency was formerly known as Ross Skye and Inverness West. It has been amended to include Lochaber but exclude Inverness West.

Additional Information

The polling station situated furthest from a count is at Drimnin Hall, Morvern Peninsula - 140 miles from Dingwall Leisure Centre.  

     Four vessels will be used to ferry ballot boxes to the counts at Dingwall. These will be: - the Corran Ferry, between Ardgour on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula to Corran, near Fort William; the Sheerwater, between Arisaig and the island of Eigg; the Western Isles, between Mallaig and Inverie, Knoydart; and the inshore rescue boat, from the Isle of Raasay to Sconser, Skye.

     Unusual polling stations being used include: - the Prince�s House, Glenfinnan (a public house); a caravan at Balnacra, Strathcarron; the Post Office, Sconser, Skye; Torrin Outdoor Centre, Skye; Portnalong Hostel, Carbost, Skye.

Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey 

Electorate: 69,395

Area: 4,953 sq km

Boundary:   The name of the constituency has changed since June 2001 from Inverness East Nairn and Lochaber. It has lost Lochaber but includes all of Inverness.

Count Venue: Inverness Sports Centre

Depute Returning Officer: Alister Paterson, Area Administrator, Inverness, The Highland Council.
