Reay Cubs Visit Dounreay
The Reay Cub Scouts most recent outing was to the Dounreay Visitor Centre
on the evening of Wednesday 5th October 2005. Dounreay's award winning
visitor centre opened especially on Wednesday evening for the 8 to 10.5
year olds.
At the visitor centre, the Cubs learned
about home fire safety from Dounreay Fire Brigade's station officer Willie
Robertson. Follow discussions about the need for smoke detectors, testing
them, home fire safety plans, etc the cubs went outside the visitor centre
and had the opportunity to use fire extinguishers for real. The
expressions on the kids faces showed their sheer enjoyment of this
experience.
They then all had a shot of using the
fire engine's hoses in a game of "knock down the firemen". This was
promptly followed by a ride in both the fire engine and Dounreay's
Ambulance. The cubs thoroughly enjoyed their ride in the vehicles with the
blue lights flashing and the sirens blaring.
Their next activity was to learn about
the decommissioning of the Dounreay site from the visitor centre guides.
All of the cubs had a shot of the visitor centre's manipulator and learnt
that similar remote handling equipment is used in several of the
facilities at Dounreay. Some of the cubs were becoming dab hands with the
manipulator and could probably make the grade as the next generation of
Dounreay's decommissioning team.
The cubs thanked the staff at the
visitor centre for their time and left with smiles on their faces
following a fun packed evening. |
