The Pentland Firth is rich in history.  From the Viking era to modern times the sea has played a huge part in shaping the people who lived here.  Explorers, Inventors, Seafarers, Farmers, Politicians are just some of the activities brought out of the Pentland Firth area and this influence has spread across the globe.  There are museums in Caithness and Orkney highlighting the part played by the sea in the shaping of its population.  From Skara Brae to the fishing industry of the last two centuries it has been significant.  Check out the Wick Heritage Museum with its boats and huge collection of artefacts and rooms showing earlier periods.  A new fishing museum opened in Lybster in Spring 2001
