FULL COUNCIL DEBATES WESTER ROSS HYDRO ELECTRICITY SCHEME

Highland Councillors today (Thurs 11th Sept) confirmed a previous decision of the Council’s Planning, Development, Europe and Tourism Committee (held on Wed 20th August) not to object to proposals for a hydro-power development at Shieldaig and Slattadale in Wester Ross.

Councillors today voted at full Council, 32 to 27 not to object to the hydro-power application but suggested headings for planning conditions which Scottish Ministers could consider in their assessment of the proposals.

The item was brought to the full Council after nine Councillors signed a Notice of Amendment following the decision at the Planning, Development, Europe and Tourism Committee held on Wed 20th August when councillors voted 20-8 to go against recommendations by planning officials to object to the proposals because of the adverse impact the development would have on this National Scenic Area.

Consideration by members of The Highland Council was today preceded by Council officers presenting  their report and the applicants, the community councils and objectors also made their case to the Councillors. Representatives of Gairloch Community Council, Torridon and Kinlochewe Community Council, a local home-owner, Scottish Natural Heritage, SEPA, The Mountaineering Council for Scotland, John Muir Trust, and RSPB all spoke to the Committee.
