NEW YOUTH VOICE PARLIAMENT MEMBERS TO MEET UP FOR THE FIRST TIME

Just before the October school holidays elections were held in every secondary school in the Highlands to appoint 70 young people onto Highland Youth Voice - the parliament for young people in the Highlands.

The successfully elected representatives will be meeting up for the first time this weekend in Drumnadrochit to elect an executive committee and take part in a wide range of workshops, activities, discussion groups, debates and to listen to guest speakers.

The weekend begins at 2pm on Friday (22 Nov) at the Loch Ness Lodge with guest speaker Sandy Cumming, the Chief Executive of Highlands and Islands Enterprise performing the official opening of the event on behalf of The Highland Wellbeing Alliance.

This introduction will be followed by workshops on such topics as:-

* being a representative of Highland Youth Voice,

* decision making,

* negotiation and

* deciding on the priorities of the Parliament over the next 2 years.

Also over the weekend Sarah English, an ex pupil of Dingwall Academy now working in Brussels, will be coming to speak to the Parliament about European citizenship and young people.

The weekend won't be all work and no play. Members will also get the chance to take part in a range of outdoor activities, circus skills, art workshops and listen to live music from two Highland bands.

An Executive Committee of 11 members will be elected during this weekend. This Committee will then be meeting up on Friday 13 December at Fairburn Activity Centre to elect the Highland Youth Voice Chairperson and Secretary and plan developments for the forthcoming year.
