Halkirk Gets Kerbside Recycling
Following on from the success of the Kerbside recycling collections which began last April in Wick and Thurso, The Highland Council has decided to expand the service to include another 350 households in Halkirk on the garden waste collection service.

Each household on the route in Halkirk has recently been supplied with an additional brown wheelie bin and a Kerbside recycling calendar giving the collection dates. The new recycling collections will start on Friday 14 April 2006 and will operate on a fortnightly basis. The normal refuse collection will be unaffected.

The Council is introducing the new Kerbside recycling service to make it much easier for people to recycle their household waste from their own front door. By separating their garden waste for recycling, householders can help reduce the green house gas emissions caused by biodegradable material going to landfill.

Local Councillor David Flear said: "Since the recycling collections began in Wick and Thurso just over 1200 tonnes of garden waste has been collected for composting which has surpassed all expectations. This is fantastic news and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone taking part and encourage residents to continue to keep up the good work."
