SECOND GEAR - Improving Caithness Young Folk's Driving Skills

The First Ever Second Gear Driver Training day took place recently at Dounreay using the site's 'off road' area.  Second Gear was planned as a follow-up day to the successful First Gear Training Programme and was devised by Brian Lavery of the Community Education Service, Wick.  It was co-ordinated and co-presented by Brian together with Diane Gibson, Caithness fieldworker with the Highland Association of Youth Clubs.

Under the expert tuition of local driving instructors Nicola Mowat (Nicola Mowat Driver Training and Joan Mackay (Naver Driving Tuition) the five participants- Carys Lavery, Judith Mackenzie, Fiona Gordon, Jill Rosie and Erin Lawson- had a go at more advanced driving manoeuvres than are covered in the First Gear programme, each participant having around double the amount of driving time, around 40 minutes each.  The rest of the day was spent covering aspects of the theory test with the help of PC Alan Loomes of the Northern Constabulary and PC Phil Williams-Blake of UKAEA Constabulary.
