This month sees the release of local musician Karen Steven's latest CD entitled "The Fiddle Workshop." It is aimed at fiddlers wishing to expand their repertoire of tunes.  This is a double CD consisting of over 2 hours of recording.  The recording begins with all 14 tunes performed in 3 sets on fiddle (Karen Steven) and piano (Anne Taylor).  Eleven of the 14 tunes are traditional and the final 3 tunes are Karen's own compositions.  Karen has two other fiddle CD's which can be seen on her web site.  You can also hear sample tracks from the earlier ones on the web site or from the links on this item.  If you know someone learning to play this might make a good stocking filler.

MUSICIANS' FUND HITS THE RIGHT NOTE
Musicians in the Highlands and Islands are being encouraged to apply for grants of up to £500 through a new initiative launched today by HI~Arts.  The Musicians' Awards scheme has been devised by the arts development agency in a bid to help musicians develop their talents, and is being jointly funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Scottish Arts Council.  It is open to both performers and composers, and although only professional musicians are eligible to apply for a grant, those aspiring to professional status may also qualify for assistance.  Grants are available towards a range of costs, including training courses, travel for research purposes, participation in events and the production of demo tapes.
HI~Arts director Robert Livingston explains the aims of the scheme:
"HI~Arts already offers similar schemes for writers and artists, and we've found that often just a few hundred pounds are enough to make a difference at a crucial time.  This new scheme is just part of our ongoing support for the development of the music industry in the Highlands and Islands under the MIDAS banner."
Application forms and information on the scheme's guidelines are available from John Saich at HI~Arts on 01463 717091.
