Argyle Square Area Association

Fun and Games in the Green
Saturday 19 August 2006 - 2.00 - 4.00pm

The Argyle Square Area Association is hosting its annual Summer Fun Day in the centre of Argyle Square on Saturday 19 August from 2.00 – 4.00 pm. There will be the usual variety of stalls including baking, bottle, bric-a-brac, new and nearly new clothing, raffles, hot dogs and refreshments. No fun day would be complete without the bouncy castle, fire engine and face painting for the younger children whilst Dane Miller and Karen Spruce will be supervising their annual assault course. An adult’s event using the assault course is planned, with prizes for the fastest competitor in the various sections ie children, adult female and male. For the more daring a special ‘Tilt the Bucket’ event will be held and again there will be a prize for the most successful.

The ASAA was formed in September 2003 by local residents who were concerned that the central area of the Green was becoming run down through lack of investment and maintenance. The street furniture was old and damaged and the pathway down the centre of the Green was extremely dark during the winter period. As a result the residents decided to fundraise to provide new lighting, street furniture and signage to an area which has often been described as ‘the jewel in the crown’ for Wick.

The overall cost of the project is estimated at £35K and to date the group has raised £4,660.00 from their annual fun days, received £300 from UKAEA and successful applied to 2007 Highland Year of Culture for £10K.

Lorna Simpson, ASAA Chairperson said ‘we have an excellent group of volunteers who work hard to fundraise for the Green and are committed to the project. Argyle Square is such an impressive area and we are determined to improve it and hope to link in with the Wick CCTV scheme for Pulteneytown. We have received tremendous support and encouragement from local residents of Wick and hope that they will continue to assist our aim.

We welcome any donations for the various stalls for this year’s fun day and they can be handed in to No 40 Argyle Square or arrangements can be made to collect any items’.

Ten members of the Association are actively training for a further fundraising event which takes place on 9 September 2006 and involves climbing Ben Nevis. Anybody wishing to sponsor the event can contact Lorna Simpson, 40 Argyle Square, Wick on 01955 503502
