About Samaritans
Samaritans provides a support service 24 hours a day, 7days a week, every week of the year for all those experiencing emotional stress.

In 2004 Samaritans received over 4,700,000 contacts by phone, email, letter and face to face at Branches, such as Thurso, in prisons and at local events and festivals. Nearly 20% of those contacts were from people expressing suicidal feelings. The service depends upon 17,500 volunteers who in 2004 gave nearly 2.5 million hours of their time to provide confidential emotional support.

In Scotland there are 20 Branches (plus Correspondence Branch), including Branches in Thurso, Inverness, Orkney and Shetland, and nearly 1000 volunteers. In 2004 these volunteers put in 160,000 hours and received 140,000 contacts.

In 2003 there were 791 deaths by suicide in Scotland (more than 2 per day) including 104 by people under the age of 24.
