The
lodge dates from around 1895 and once belonged to the Sinclair family.
The house was built some twenty years after the nearby Altnabreac Station
where the building materials were transported to as there were no suitable
roads. The house was for while a hotel but this closed in 1975
and the house reverted to a private residence. The roads today
are not made up roads but tracks which are accessible to cars but in poor
weather extreme care is required to prevent going off the road. The
area is remote and it is always worth telling people where you are going
when heading into isolated places.
It is possible to walk from Altnabreac to Westerdale a distance of about
14 miles. There is a
Post Bus running from Halkirk in a round trip that takes in Altnabreac
and several of the large houses in the area driving along the rough roads.
The Post Bus is a small vehicle - usually a land rover so make sure
you have checked if there are seats.
Check
Trains. There is also a school bus that may be able to take
passengers. Distances between habitation here are long with five to
ten miles between houses common and there are no shops and few phones. |
