Your
Forests In The New Millennium

More Trees for Caithness? 20
October 2000
A National Initiative to plant trees has missed the Highlands.
Now the region's local authority is trying to identify sites where the
public can plant their own trees for community benefit.
Trees of Timer and place is a national scheme which has been running for
two years to get more trees planted by the public.
It aims to break the record for tree planting in November during National
Tree Week. Five hundred planting sites have already been designated
but none in the Highlands. Now area committees of Highland council
are being asked to identify sites where people can plant trees.. On
Monday, Councillors will be asked to declare sites at Millbank in Thurso
and Newton
Hill Community Woodland near Wick as official planting
sites. Graham Nichols area cultural and leisure services manager has
said it would be open to any community group to seek permission to use
council sites at other locations.
