Kids On Holiday
There's Something To Do In Caithness 2005

Schools Out and "nuthin" to do? forget that old saying.  Caithness has a massive amount for the kids to do this summer.  On this page will be features some of the activities for children and young people over the summer holiday period.   If you are visiting Caithness with children check it all out and you will be made most welcome.  Some events may require advance booking so get the pen and paper out and note down activities of interest and get on the phone. Light Factory - Thurso - 8 - 12 August
Light Factory Holiday Club presents "Landlubbers" - what happens when pirates don't want to be pirates any more? Fun for any children who were at primary school this year. It's on 8th - 12th August, 10am - 12 noon, Thurso High School, cost 50p per session. Contact Helen McLaren on 831353 for more details.

The Community Programme
Thurso Swimming Pool – FREE
swimming on Monday mornings from 9am – 12noon for all school pupils during the summer holidays.

OCTOPUSH on Wednesday 13 July at 10am – 12noon for 12 – 16 year olds - 50p. Limited numbers.

Wick Swimming Pool – FREE swimming on Thursday afternoons from 1pm – 4pm for all school pupils during the summer holidays. (The usual Swimming Pool rules apply during the free swimming sessions.)

–Pond dipping, bird watching and mini beasts! Explore the wild life around Dunnet. Dunnet pavilion 11am - 1pm. 8-11 yrs.
7th July - Woodland treasure hunt, Newtonhill wood 11am-12.30pm, 8-11years.
12th July –Sea shells and seabirds
Duncansby Head lighthouse carpark, stout footwear and warm clothes. 11am - 1pm. 8 yrs upwards.
14th July –Rock pool exploring, Stains carpark, Keiss beach. 11am-12.30pm. 8 - 11 yrs. Booking recommended.
19th July – Dragon Walk
Dunnet forest, discover the mystery of damsels and dragons that live in this forest 8 - 11 yrs. 11am - 1pm.
21st July –Bonkers about birds
Lybster heritage centre 11am-12.30, 8-11yrs.
26th July – Animals through games Dunnet bay childrens group. 11am, 7-11yrs
28th July –Wick river Come and dip for mini beasts, Somerfield carpark, boating shed end. 11am-12.30pm, 8-11yrs.

Why not enter some of the art competitions for children at these events or take part in the Highland Dancing competitions.  Just check out with organisers how to enter.  Many folk enter but if you have never gone in for them before check out how you do it and then enter them a few on the day. 
Many of the vents have fun sports - mainly races for children and anyone can enter on the field. Fun and you might win a small money prize.

Badminton
Did you know you can rent the badminton rooms in the Wick Assembly Rooms.  Worth while if you a have few children to amuse for a couple of hours. Contact the Service Point to book.

Caithness has lots of them and if you want to go a little further so has Sutherland.  Pick your day and head out for a day at the beach.

So You Want To Be an Archaeologist?
4 - 22 July 2005
Older teenagers interested in Archaeology might like to head out to see if they can volunteer to join the archaeological dig at Battlemoss.  Will need willing parents to drive out to the dig every day.  Anyone with an interest in Archaeology might like to take part in this dig and find out how it is all done with experts on hand to help you  The dig is on a cairn found two years ago and being dug for the first time.  You never know what will be found.  the dig will be open to the public to see round and ask questions. Open Days are planned.
