Far North Sub-Aqua Club held the second of their "Try Dive" evenings in Thurso on Thursday 17 October at the Thurso Swimming Pool. Thurso Round Table members had the opportunity to try out the new equipment acquired by the club following a lottery grant of £5000 from "Awards for All". The club used the money to purchase 6 full sets of diving equipment and spare tanks. North Sub-Aqua club is based in Wick and is the second club in Caithness - the other being Caithness Diving Club based in Thurso. Far North Sub-Aqua is a recently formed branch of British Sub Aqua Club and in the year since its formation have increased its membership from an original 8 to 19. The new sets of equipment purchased with the lottery cash now allow the club to offer training and diving as members can use the equipment during training sessions and rent it out for diving trips. Members ages range from 14 (the minimum age for membership) to 65. The "Try Dive evenings in wick where 45 people turned up and the one in Thurso were set up in order to allow people to try out diving in a safe environment.. The club is lucky to have three Nationally qualified instructors (two of whom are BCAC Advanced instructors) and means they can provide training from Ocean Diver through to Advanced Diver. The club also offers a full range of Skill Development courses and Advanced Nitrox courses. The Thurso Round Table also decided to make a donation to the new club at the "Try Dive" evening and presented them with a cheque for £150. The club are actively pursuing getting their own premises to be a clubhouse - hopefully at Wick harbour. The members are already into the serious stuff of preparing a business plan and getting advice on the serious fund raising necessary obtain premises.
