Captains Galley Opening Date Set For Large Gathering Of Well Wishers At Captain's Galley Jim Cowie invited suppliers and a range of people who had helped him get his new seafood restaurant up and ready to open. He thanked everyone who had supported him in the venture and for coming along to get an early preview of the new restaurant, kitchen and cocktail bar. Jim said he was glad to have a restaurant that made use of the product that is landed in the county but mainly goes off south on lorries. The Captain's Galley restaurant will be the only one in the county dedicated solely to serving high quality seafood dishes. Set in the old ice house at Scrabster it retains the connection with fish for which the building was built in the old days to keep ice to preserve the fish on its long journey south. A unique listed building it has an unusual barrel roof and all of the original stonework has been retained to give it and unusual and interesting local feel. Jim knows the cost of fish in more ways than one and he made two personal presentations of cheques to organisations connected with the fishing industry. One to the local Thurso Lifeboat and the other to the Fisherman's mission based in Scrabster. Whilst retaining the old ice house there has been a new building added at the side in keeping with the building where the new all stainless steel kitchen is located. The former office on the other side of the building has been joined with a new porch walk way to the small bar area. The restaurant is ready but will open next week after staff had time to practice in the new kitchen to ensure that everything works as smoothly as possible. It is a small and intimate place that is sure to attract a growing number of folk looking to get the very best of seafood from around the north of Scotland |
