TRADITIONAL MUSIC NIGHT On Wednesday 28th May 2003 there will be a feast of traditional music on offer in Wick when traditional music students from the North Highland College in Alness will put on a show in the Pipe Band Hall, High Street, Wick. The students are tutored by local Caithness musicians Bobby Coghill and Karen Steven.
The evening starts at 7.30pm and admission will cost £3 which will include tea or coffee and biscuits during the interval. North Highland College relocated it’s
full-time music provision to the Alness Outreach Centre in August 2002.
There are currently around thirty students enrolled on a range of courses
covering traditional and modern music. The students come from all over the
country and the age range is everything from school leavers right up to
pensioners. At level one there are no prerequisites and therefore the
course is open to complete beginners, while at the HNC level, students are
expected to be of performance standard. The traditional instruments
offered are currently accordion, fiddle and bagpipes. With various
opportunities to perform in and around Scotland and to apply onto higher
education courses upon successful completion of the NC or HNC, North
Highland College provides an opportunity for individuals to develop their
practical and academic music skills. Subjects on offer include solo and
group performance, music theory, recording, composition and music business
studies in addition to many other subjects. Courses are available on a
