Highland Council    
Highland Council Offices To Be Hit By Strike Action - Tuesday 28 March 2006
Services provided by The Highland Council will be disrupted on Tuesday 28 March as the result of industrial action taken in protest at Government plans to change pension rights.

The Council's headquarters at Glenurquhart Road, Inverness, including the cash office there, and all area offices will be open on Tuesday. However, the Council has been advised of significant disruptions to service which are detailed below: -

Service Points:
20 of the Council's network of 37 Service Points - one stop centres for information and advice on Council services - will be closed. These are:

Caithness: Wick and Thurso;
Sutherland: Bettyhill; Brora, Golspie;
Ross and Cromarty: Alness, Dingwall, Ullapool; Fortrose, Invergordon, Tain
Inverness: Inverness, Fort Augustus,
Nairn: Nairn
Badenoch and Strathspey: Aviemore, Kingussie, Grantown
Lochaber: Fort William and Mallaig
Skye and Lochalsh: Broadford

Registrars:
The following offices will be closed:
Black Isle, Brora, Dingwall, Fort Augustus, Fort William, Golspie,
Grantown, Kingussie, Bettyhill, Ullapool, Nairn, Invergordon and Tain.

Refuse Collection/bulky uplifts
There will be no refuse collection, kerbside recycling or bulky uplifts on Tuesday. Residents should NOT put their bins out that day. Normal collection will be the following Tuesday.

Recycling Centres:
It is likely these will be closed.

Burials/Cremations:
There will be no burials or cremations on Tuesday.

Public Conveniences:
Notices will be posted on the manned public conveniences that will be closed on Tuesday..

Ferry:
It is likely that the Corran Ferry linking Nether Lochaber to Ardgour and the Camusnagaul passenger ferry, Fort William, will not operate on Tuesday.

Winter Maintenance:
Should there be a forecast of adverse weather on Monday, TEC Services will seek exemptions for road maintenance staff to be on duty.

Schools:

Teaching unions are not on strike on Tuesday. All primary and secondary schools are expected to be open. However, the industrial action taken by ancillary staff, such as janitors, catering and cleaning staff, and classroom assistants and drivers will impact on the level of service provided at schools. If there is disruption, advice will be given to parents via schoolbag mail tonight (Friday).

The only school currently known to be closed on Tuesday is Drummond School, Inverness. Some pupils attending special education units in primary and secondary schools will be asked to stay at home on Tuesday. A number of nursery classes will also be closed on Tuesday. The school meals service will also be disrupted in many schools. Pupils will be advised to take packed lunches. Also affected are libraries, community centres and swimming pools.

Lochaber: Arisaig, Ballachulish English Medium; Banavie, Caol,
Fort William RC; Strontian, Upper Achintore,
Inverness: Cauldeen, Cradlehall, Dalneigh, Drummond, Duncan
Forbes, Farr, Hilton, Lochardil, Smithton, St Joseph's.
Nairn: Millbank, Rosebank
Badenoch and Strathspey: Grantown, Kingussie

Pupils or classes with additional support needs: There will be a disruption to services provided at: -

Lochaber: Banavie Primary, Lochaber High
Inverness: Central, Charleston Academy, Inverness Royal Academy, Millburn Academy, Strathdearn Primary
Nairn: Millbank and Rosebank
Badenoch and Strathspey: Grantown Grammar

Swimming Pool Closures:
Caithness: Thurso and Wick
Sutherland: Golspie
Nairn: Nairn

Library/Community Centre Closures:
Caithness: Thurso and Wick Libraries; Thurso and Wick Galleries
Sutherland: Golspie Community Learning Centre; Brora Learning Centre (pm)
Skye and Lochalsh: Broadford Library
Inverness: Hilton Community Centre; Spectrum Community Centre (pm), Inverness Library; Culloden Library; Glenurquhart Library;
Inverness Library Housebound Service; Inverness Mobile Library;
Inverness Museum and Art Gallery; Library Support Unit.
Nairn: Nairn Community Centre; Nairn Library; Nairn Community Centre

Social Work:
Residential care will be maintained and home care will be provided to the most vulnerable but it is likely that day care services will be affected on Tuesday.
