CLACHNAHARRY BRIDGE – TEMPORARY WEIGHT RESTRICTION

An emergency weight restriction of 7.5 tonnes is being imposed at the Clachnaharry Bridge on the A 862 Inverness – Beauly road from Monday 11 March.

This will effectively ban all heavy vehicles from crossing the bridge until the deck of the 140-year-old bridge is replaced. The replacement is expected to take place in the autumn.

Service and school buses and recognised emergency vehicles will be exempt from the restriction.

Any driver who contravenes the order, which is made under the Road Traffic Regulation Act of 1984, is open to prosecution.

A total of 40 advance warning signs are currently being made and will be in place this weekend to advise drivers of the restriction.

In the event of the Kessock Bridge being closed due to an accident or high winds, drivers of commercial vehicles will be directed to suitable parking areas to await the reopening of the bridge.

Drivers heading north will be advised to park their vehicles in the car park beside the Caledonian Stadium at the Longman, while southbound vehicles will be advised to park at the Shiach Service Station at Evanton or the truck stop off at Tore.

Drivers of heavy goods vehicles are strongly advised not to travel north via Abriachan or via Drumnadrochit and Kiltarlity. These are not recommended diversions.

Railtrack asked the council to impose the weight restriction because of their concerns at the condition of the deck of the bridge. They have planning permission to replace the deck and have said this will go ahead in September/October. This will involved a three-week closure of the road, preceded by five weeks of single-lane traffic movement, controlled by traffic lights.
