Staxigoe Football Tournament STAXIGOE was the venue for a feast of junior football on Sunday as five teams competed in a seven-a-side tournament on the village pitch. The event was organised by Robin Aitken, who is in the process of setting up a Staxigoe junior football club. He selected two squads - comprising boys from the Staxigoe area and from Wick - while Stewart Cumming entered three under-13 teams from East End Boys' Club. The tournament was played in an excellent spirit and the winners' medals went to one of the East End teams who picked up maximum points from their four matches. The day was rounded off with penalty-kick competitions for two age groups - primary pupils and those of high school age. The winners were 12-year-old Derek Rosie and Andrew Cumming (13) respectively. The event took place in overcast but warm conditions and there was a good turnout of spectators. They enjoyed some end-to-end action on the compact Staxigoe pitch which recently had new goal-nets installed. Robin was assisted by a willing team of helpers, some of whom manned a hot-dog stall which did a roaring trade in snacks and drinks. |
