Fun With Fruit

HIGHLAND KIDS GO BANANAS

Fun with Fruit aims to increase the consumption of fruit in 3 and 4 year olds and help to establish good eating habits in early childhood. £35,000 per year from the Health Improvement Fund will finance this project over the next 3 years. Nurseries have welcomed this initiative which is a result of joint working by Health Promotion and the Childcare partnership.

Eating more fruit and veg is the most important change to your diet you can make. Everyone should eat at least 5 portions of fruit and veg a day - the average in Highland is 2 portions.  Fiona Clarke, Health Promotion Adviser said:

“It is important to develop good eating habits in children and this project encourages 3 and 4 year olds to eat fruit everyday, to try different kinds of fruit and hopefully to think of fruit as a handy snack.”

Fun with Fruit gives funding and a resource pack so that nurseries can buy more fruit for their children and teach the importance of fruit and veg in the diet. Rural nurseries and local shops have been encouraged to link up - to encourage the turnover of good quality fruit for all the community.

Senior Early Education Development Officer, Heather Calo said:

“We have developed the Fun with Fruit pack so that the project can be easily used by nurseries in developing fruit based activities throughout the curriculum - games, songs, cooking and growing - it all helps get the message across.”
