LAUNCH OF THE CARERS’ RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN
A major recruitment drive was launched in the Highlands on Wednesday 23 January for a wide range of carers for children.

The Highland Council is seeking: -

  • short and long term foster carers;
  • adoptive parents;
  • specialist carers for children who are particularly troubled; and
  • short break respite carers for families with children with a disability.

Councillor Margaret Davidson, Chairman of the Joint Committee on Young People and Children, said: "We are looking for a range of people with different skills and varied time available, ranging from a weekend to a lifetime. We want as many people as possible to come forward as we need to build up our bank of carers, so we have more choice when children need to be looked after away from home. We will provide the training. Caring for children and young people is so worthwhile and can make such a difference."

There are 180 children and young people living with foster carers, compared with 26 in children's homes and 31 in school placements outwith Highland. 13 children are placed with prospective adopters and four with specialist carers. There is always a demand for respite care and the new Positive Partnerships Scheme is seen as a way of increasing the carers in the community who look after children with disabilities and complementing the work of the respite care centre at The Orchard, Drummond, Inverness.
