Strike Day 21 January 2003
No strike in retained areas like Caithness

The following dates have been set for next action 16 Dec
Next strike scheduled for the end of January 2003 if no settlement of the dispute is reached.  Areas like Caithness with retained firemen are so far unaffected.

Caithness Firemen To Remain On Call 13 November 2002
Caithness retained firemen will remain on call when the strike finally comes into being on 13 November at 6.00pm.  There was relief in many places as the army Green Goddesses are based in Dingwall nearly 100 miles away from Parts of Caithness and Sutherland.  Retained firemen are part-time and are on call from their main places of employment..  With top speed of between 35 and 40 miles per hour these antiquated vehicles used by the army are no match for modern fire engines.  Most fires in the Highlands would be over by the time the Green Goddess arrived.  The retained firefighters union is against the strike called by the full time Fire Brigades Union in its bid to get a 40% pay rise.  So far they have been offered 14% over two years with strings attached regarding changes in working practices.

Police Major Incident Suite Comes Into Use 24 October
During the period of strike action
the Major Incident Suite at the Force Operations Room at Burnett Road Police Office, Inverness will be open 24 hours a day.  Head of Operations for Northern Constabulary, Chief Superintendent Jim Heddle,
will chair a briefing assisted by members of the Fire Service, Military and Highland Council on Friday 25 October.
