DECOMMISSIONING THE DOUNREAY WASTE SHAFT

Hydrological Investigation - providing data about the water flow and pressure, geology and chemistry in the rock and vicinity of the Shaft

Plug Reinforcement - to ensure the plug at the base of the Shaft can withstand the additional water pressure it will experience as the shaft is progressively emptied.

Extension of licensed site boundary - to ensure all the work is carried out within the boundary of the licensed nuclear site and therefore under the regulation of the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate of the Health and Safety Executive.

Cliff stabilisation - to provide a stable platform for the construction of the retrieval headworks

Shaft isolation -  the hydraulic isolation of the Shaft from the geosphere to minimise the amount of contaminated water that must be managed during waste retrieval.

Waste Treatment Plant - to receive, process, condition and package the waste at the surface, to modern standards and in a form suitable for long-term storage and disposal.

Conditioned Waste Store - to store the waste in secure facility pending a national policy about its management in the longer term.

Retrieval technique - to identify and develop the most appropriate technique to bring the waste to the surface.
