DENIS TUNNICLIFFE APPOINTED NEW CHAIRMAN OF UKAEA

Denis Tunnicliffe, CBE, the former Chief Executive of London Transport, has been appointed Chairman of the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority following the retirement of Sir Kenneth Eaton. Mr Tunnicliffe will take up his appointment at the beginning of April. UKAEA's business is to manage the decommissioning and environmental restoration of its nuclear sites. It is also responsible for the UK's contribution to the fusion energy programme.

Denis Tunnicliffe brings to UKAEA considerable experience of management in the aviation industry and the transport sector where he was involved in major innovative engineering projects. He was Managing Director of London Underground from 1988 to 1998 before becoming Chief Executive of London Transport.

Prior to 1988 he had a distinguished career in civil aviation. He joined BOAC in 1966 as a co-pilot on VC10s and then Boeing 747s before joining, now British Airways' management team working in industrial relations, planning, procurement, and marketing. In 1986 he became Chief Executive of the International Leisure Group's Aviation Division.  He was made a CBE in 1993 and is married with two adult sons. Commenting on his appointment, Mr Tunnicliffe said: "I am delighted to be joining UKAEA at this important stage in its development. I am keenly aware of the progress UKAEA has made - not least in turning around the performance and reputation of the Dounreay site - and confident of its ability to build on this success. The next few years will be challenging for everyone at UKAEA as it prepares for the new Liabilities Management Authority, recently announced by the Government, and takes the lead in fully exploiting the potential of fusion energy. I look forward to contributing to that effort."
