LAUNCH OF TAIN CCTV

The new CCTV system in Tain will be officially opened on Friday, 7 December by Peter Peacock MSP, Depute Minister for Finance and Public Services at the Scottish Executive.  The project was undertaken by Tain Initiative Group in response to the results of a postal survey sent to every household in Tain postcode area in May 2000, which highlighted that CCTV was one of the top priorities to combat an increase in crimes of a violent nature, dishonesty, vandalism and public order.

Tain Initiative Group Project Officer, Fiona Robertson, put together a bid for funding to the Scottish Executive's 'Make our Communities Safer' Challenge Competition and in February this year the Group were delighted to learn that their bid had been successful. They were awarded £45,000, 50% of the funding to
install a full town centre CCTV system. The balance of funding was met by Tain Common Good Fund.
The partners involved in setting up the system were Tain Initiative Group, Tain Community Council and Northern Constabulary.

Tenders were received from four companies and the contract was awarded to a company who are highly specialised in town centre CCTV initiatives, Sensormatic Ltd, Falkirk.  Eight cameras in total are installed, covering the whole of the town centre.

The control unit is installed at the Tain Police Station, were a custom built CCTV operation room has been designed.

The Highland Council has upgraded the town centre lighting to a very high standard to enable full night-time viewing of all 8 cameras.

Thurso CCTV still has some funding problems to sort out before it can go ahead.
