UKAEA For NDA Hands Over 300 To Sponsor Massed Bands

UKAEA Dounreay, on behalf of the NDA have sponsored the forthcoming Massed Bands parade. The parade which takes place on Saturday 16th September in Market Square, Wick will include the Sutherland Caledonian, Thurso, Caithness Junior, Tain and Wick RBLS Pipe Bands. John Bogle, Pipe Band Secretary, said: "We are extremely grateful to UKAEA for their support for this major community event. Massed Pipe Band displays are always very popular in Wick but they do cost a lot to stage despite the fact that all the participating bands are giving their services free of charge. The acoustics in Wick's Market Square are great for pipe bands and I am sure it will be a fantastic night. All we need now is some decent weather!". John Bogle is pictured here receiving the cheque from Eann Plowman of UKAEA and his daughter Jade with the Wick RBLS Pipe Band.

The Massed Pipe Band display will take place on Saturday 16th September 2006 commencing at 7.30pm in the Market Square, Wick. Prior to the event the Massed Band will march from the Francis Street Club to the Market Square. There will be 5 bands taking part - Caithness Juvenile Pipe Band, Sutherland Caledonian Pipe Band, Tain Pipe Band, Thurso Pipe Band and Wick RBLS Pipe Band. There will be a mixture of Massed Band sets and solo band sets. After the display there will be a ceilidh/dance in the Francis Street Club starting at 9.30pm.

Lungwort Lichen Survey

A long term survey into a species of lichen that indicates levels of air pollution has been started in Caithness. The survey has been organised through Highland Council's Planning and Development Service Countryside Rangers as part of the Caithness Countryside Volunteer programme of events. Caithness Countryside Volunteers commenced the survey last Tuesday 8th August under the direction of experts in the field, Sandy and Brian Coppins. "Lobaria pulmonaria" is a special type of lichen species found in Britain. It is a leafy shaped lichen with the undersides resembling the insides of lungs and therefore better known and remembered as lungwort. Although common in the West, the species is rare in Caithness.
