V&A Dundee commissioned Glasgow-based illustrator Ursula Kam-Ling Cheng to create a site-specific work for the exhibition. In her colourful and chaotic wall mural Girl Evader, Cheng celebrates the energy of videogames by exploring the personas we create in these virtual worlds. Interested in the escapism of videogames, Cheng draws from the fantastical worlds created in Journey and Kentucky Route Zero. Cheng works quickly and on a large scale, often illustrating backdrops for festivals and events, including independent and alternative game nights. The all-consuming work is dramatically lit with blue lights, creating the atmosphere of these events within the exhibition. As well as the large wall mural, Cheng designed an installation of back-painted PVC hangings named Ipseity Invades! She developed the playful, chaotic imagery during experimental workshops held at V&A Dundee with members of the public and the Young People’s Collective. She has incorporated designs by the workshop participants inspired by the characters they create when playing videogames.
