A Weekend Based At Wick Exploring Thomas Telford's Work
Thomas Telford's Town A Weekend Break of Walks and Talks 3rd - 5th July
Wick as the largest herring port in Europe was steeped in the history of the rise of the British Fishing Industry in the 19th Century, and for professionals and tourists alike, this weekend mini-conference will provide a background to the rich urban heritage of Thomas Telford's - Pulteneytown chosen to be the settlement for the development of Wick harbour in1807 and this was his only planned industrial site throughout his career. Working in conjunction with I.C.E.'s Panel for Historical Engineering Works, Scotland, engineers etc, will have the opportunity to examine, share and celebrate in the 200th Anniversary of one of Thomas Telford's achievements in Caithness. (Mill Lade: 1807 -1809 ) The weekend will begin on Friday 3rd July 2009 and will include a guided walk around the historic burgh of Wick and Pulteneytown. The purpose being to understand the evolution of the town, it's noted buildings and streets as planned by Telford. After lunch, a visit to Pulteneytown Distillery and later a commemorative sculpture will be unveiled to celebrate the 200th Anniversary of the Mill Lade (Telford's water scheme for the settlement of Pulteneytown.) Civic reception in evening followed by dinner with musical entertainment. Saturday 4th July will comprise a visit to Wick Heritage Museum and the Fishing Mart in the morning followed after lunch by a guided coach tour to various Telford buildings, Berriedale Church, Dunbeath Harbour, bridges and modern engineering projects in Caithness with celebratory dinner with invited guest speakers in the evening. Sunday 5th July. A visit to Sinclair Girnigoe Castle to view the restoration and engineering skills employed, Noss Head Lighthouse, followed by lunch with interpretative exhibition from prominent businesses in Caithness highlighting local engineering projects. In the afternoon people will have the opportunity to visit other Telford and Bremner engineering works by guided coach tour followed in the evening by dinner with guest speakers to complete the weekend.
