Wick Team Represented Highland At The
Toughest Young Fire Crew Games Basic first aid with the Wick Ambulance Service and a visit to Wick Airport Fire service were all part of the experience they gained. The Wick fire station runs the course for the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme which is for High School Pupils and have done so for 12 years. The dedicated help from all involved to run the course was appreciated. The Wick station also this year volunteered to run the same 9 week course for the Wick Sea Cadets. Between the Duke of Edinburgh pupils from the high school and the sea cadets 7 young firefighters were chosen to represent the Highlands and go to Liverpool to compete in the games. This was a great opportunity for the youngsters and they were the only team to enter from Scotland. The trip was funded by the fire brigade and the Wick sea cadets. They travelled by minibus on the Friday and the games were on the Sunday. Accompanying the youngsters were Wick fire station Crew manager Richard Mackay, Fire fighter Graeme Miller, Sea Cadet instructor Laura Menzies and Duke of Edinburgh organiser Jane Wedderburn. Over the 100m metre course they had to carry a fire engine and along the way they rescued a cat from a tree, retrieved a few items from a ball pond, manoeuvre the fire engine around a chicane, built a dam filled it with water and aimed at a target with the hose. Overall they came 4th and were delighted with this and had a wonderful weekend. They certainly did Caithness proud.
