From Earlier Years
Wick Arion Choir was
founded by Mrs Aline Mowat in 1958 with only 5 members, growing to over
50 members by the time they contributed to an LP seven years later
called "Music of the Highlands and Islands". The album
was recorded by Grampian Records when their studios were in Bank Row and
also included numbers by Argo Cameron a singer from Bonar Bridge, Wick
Scottish Dance Band, Stewart Ross a singer from Inverness and Lewis Paul
an Inverness Folk singer. The choir travelled south to many music festivals even as far as Glasgow and made several radio broadcasts. Mrs Mowat staged many elaborate concerts with the help of the late Henry Rosie and Mrs Margaret Abernethy also now deceased. These always featured well known artistes such as Ann & Laura Brand, Moira Anderson or Bill McCue who were prominent on Scottish Television at that time. Mrs Mowat had her work cut out organising up to 50 children, but usually with very few cross words. We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and had a lot of fun along the way. |
