Dear Parent/ Guardian,

We have been back to school for three weeks and so much has happened in the short space of time. Many thanks to you all for your support in the life of the school.

What’s happened so far ……….

  • We had a really successful “Bug Busting” Day on the 31st October – there were some weird and wonderful hairstyles that day as well as the children learning facts about the dreaded head lice. The children in P1 – P7 took part in a “Design a Hairstyle Competition” and we had prize winners from each class. Cora Hourston in P1/2, Nicolle Larnach in P3/4, Ronnie Wood in P4/5, Alan Farquhar in P5/6 and Megan Sutherland in P7. They all received a felt pen pack and glittery notebook. Well done!
  • P5/6, P4/5 and P3/4 are thoroughly enjoying swimming this term – some children have made great progress and gained confidence in the water. This will continue until Christmas.
  •  The children in P1/2 and P3/4 are involved in drama activities with David Hunter from Eden Court Theatre. He has some superb ideas which the children are enjoying each week. This will continue for another four weeks. Perhaps some of their skills will be evident in the Christmas Concert on 13th December.
  • Major Norman from the Salvation Army has continued to join us for our Assemblies and the children really love listening to his stories. Last week we heard about the Elephant Pit and the message of “Being Honest”. He also joins the children for lunch and was very impressed with their manners and conversations at the table.
  • Lorna Ross (Chloe and Shannon’s granny) from the Wick Blythswood shop gave a talk on Monday about the Shoebox Appeal – she certainly gave us tips to help us reach our target of 50 filled boxes. In fact we have raced passed this target and now have almost 100 ready to be uplifted today! Thank you all for your generosity – it is amazing to see the mountain of boxes and it was exciting for the children and staff to pack them. The children raised £104 on “Bug Busting” Day which will be donated to the Appeal.

Care Commission Inspection
The Nursery will have an Inspection on Wednesday 15th November by Jill Wilmot. This is part of an ongoing process of evaluation of the service. I’m sure parents/ carers will chat freely with her in the passing.

Christmas Tree Competition
Your child will come home with a Christmas pudding sheet to decorate - the prize is a real Christmas tree. All entries should be handed into the school office by Friday 17th November 2006. Thank you!

Parents’ Evening
Appointments have been given out for Thursday 16th November to speak to your child’s teacher regarding their progress. Please return the tear-off slip to your child’s class teacher by Monday 13th November. I will be available throughout the evening if you wish to discuss any issues arising.
Reflective arm bands will be on sale for these dark wintry nights. Cost £1.

The Scholastic Book Fair
Yo Ho Ho! The ever popular Book Fair returns next week with a pirate theme. Your child will have a leaflet tucked in their school bag so please have a look through. There will be a wide range of books available (some about pirates) to suit the Nursery children to P7 readers. Karen Bain (Kirsty’s mum), our willing parent volunteer will organise along with Lynne Bain (Roddy & Kyle’s mum) and your child will have an opportunity to view them & place an order during the week. Anyone willing to help out for an hour or two would be most welcome – please contact Mrs Sargent in the school office as soon as possible. The Book Fair will be open on Thursday in the P.S.B. – you may manage to do a little Christmas shopping? The children will receive their books in a few weeks as we need to place orders for many of the titles. The school does receive commission for the book sales so your child really benefits from this event.

P7 teacher
Mrs Ferrier will remain as the P7 teacher for the whole session. The children have worked so hard with her and have planned out personal targets. This ensures continuity in the learning and teaching for all. We have not appointed a Principal Teacher – this job will be re-advertised about Easter 2007.

Parent/Staff Association
A date has been set for the A.G.M. – this will be Wednesday 29th November at 6.30pm in staff room or Hall if our numbers increase! Please come along and give your support to fund raising events and other school matters. We will appoint new office bearers at this meeting and look at the constitution.

Key dates
Christmas Concert – Wednesday 13th December at 2pm and 7pm
School closes on Thursday 21st December at 3.10pm.

Further Christmas details will appear at a later date.

Kind regards

Pat Bowers
