Pulteneytown Academy
Newsletter 6 November 2006

Dear Parent

Newsletter 06.11.06

Welcome to your first Newsletter from me as Acting Head Teacher.  I am delighted to hold this post and am excited about the number of things planned for November and look forward to your support with these.

v     Remembrance Day Poppies are on sale all of this week in school and two P7 pupils, Bethany Thomson and Kobe Sutherland will lay the wreath during the Remembrance Sunday Service & Parade on behalf of the boys and girls of Pulteneytown Academy.

v     Children in Need This is being held on Fri 17 Nov and as a school we would like to support this.  I have asked the children to pass their fundraising ideas to the Pupil Council Reps and House Captains and will let you know shortly what the children have decided on.

v     St Andrews Day (Thurs 30 Nov) To celebrate this there will be a number of whole school activities

If a child wears tartan (ribbon, kilt, shirt, hairband etc)  they will be given a free tartan pencil

Every child will be given a free piece of delicious shortbread at tuck.

There will be a Scottish lunch of mince & tatties or haggis & tatties, neeps followed by shortbread iced with the Scottish flag.  There will also be a vegetarian option available.  Mrs Gayle Jappy Class Asst will pipe in the haggis and Mr Farmer will address it.

There will be a Ceilidh in the afternoon when all children will take part in some Scottish dancing, singing and have the chance to watch some of their fellow pupils performing Highland dancing and accordion playing.  We are also very lucky to have Mr Grant Lyall drumming, Mr Addie Harper on the accordion and Mrs Jappy on the pipes during our afternoon celebrations.

v     Telephoning School As Carole will not be with us for the next three weeks approx could you please not ring in the morning before 8.40 a.m.

v     Staff changes We are delighted to welcome Mrs Marjory Miller who now joins us as a Classroom Assistant.  Also, welcome back to Miss Anne Mackay who will be here on Mon Wed and will teach P1 and P5 during these days until Miss Warks return.  Mrs Vida Innes Support for Learning teacher is also returning to work with infant classes every Tues also until Miss Warks return.

v     Car Park Could you please remind your child to wait at the gate at 3.10 p.m. if you are collecting them by car, as recently we have had some children run out into the car park when they see their parent arrive, which is obviously very dangerous.  Please stress to your child the importance of waiting at the gate until you walk over and meet them so that you can then safely escort them back to your car.  Thank you for your support with this.

v     Book Club Last orders in please by 14 November.  Nursery parents are more than welcome to come and see the books if they wish.

v     Booking School Dinners Lunches are being booked by some pupils for their brothers and sisters and we are finding that when the actual pupil goes for their lunch they do not like what has been chosen for them so the cook has asked that each child book their own lunch from now on.  Please encourage your child to do this which I am sure will also help to develop their independence.

v     Highland Schools Swimming Championships This was held on 1 Nov in Inverness and I must say that all the pupils who took part from this school did exceptionally well with Matthew Ross, Alan Hughes, Fergus Richards and Fraser Tait winning gold in the relay.  Matthew also won a gold for his butterfly and silver for his front crawl, Alan a silver in the breast stroke and Fraser a bronze in the breast stroke.  The girls did not let us down either by Emma Edwards, Frances Minnock, Stacey Ross and Caitlin Bissett winning bronze in the relay and Caitlin also securing a personal best in the butterfly. Frances, Stacey and Gary Beales also did well in their individual swim.  A big well done to all of you for this marvellous achievement.

v     Parent Helpers For this years Christmas Concert, each class will perform a Christmas song.  If you feel that you would be able to give time to help with making some costumes we would very much appreciate it.  Please fill in the slip below if you can help.

v     Uniform We intend putting off an order later this week for the reversible jackets so if you wish one for your child please let us know.

v     Making Waves Holiday Club This will be open from 8.45 a.m. 6 p.m. on the 2 in-service days (Mon 20 & Tues 21 Nov) when the school is closed so please telephone 606065 if you are interested and they will give you further information about this.

v     Birthday Greetings a very happy birthday to the 24 pupils celebrating a birthday this month.

Yours sincerely
