BURNS LUNCH
The SNAG have had a terrific response to their Burns Lunch. Lunch time on Wednesday for all children will be at 12.15 pm. Home lunches will be released at this time.

It would be lovely if all the children who are taking part in the Burns Lunch could wear something tartan on the day. Children who are having packed lunches are invited to join in the activities.

I would like to thank all the children who have volunteered to recite a poem, dance, play a musical instrument. Children can wear their dancing outfits to school or they can be handed in to the school office first thing in the morning. It should prove to be an entertaining lunch time.

PRIMARY 7 COFFEE MORNING
As you will all be aware P7 have their residential trip in Edinburgh later this year. As part of their fundraising activities the P7 parents are holding a coffee morning in the Town Hall this Saturday from 10-12 pm. During the coffee morning they will be having a raffle, bottle stall and baking stall. Donations for the stalls would be gratefully received and can be dropped at the office between now and Friday afternoon.

Attached are 2 raffle tickets per family. If you wish to support P7s in their fundraising activities please complete the tear-off slips and return with monies to the school or hand in at the coffee morning on Saturday. The raffle will be drawn at the end of the coffee morning.

CHILDREN WHO NEED ADDITIONAL SUPPORT FOR THEIR LEARNING
All schools have been asked to include the following information in their school newsletter for parents. I hope you find it useful. Please take the time to read it and if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the school for further information.

Most children and young people need some support for their learning at some point in their school life. Usually the class teacher in primary school and the subject teachers in secondary school can provide this support. Some children, however, need significant additional support, long or short term, for whatever reason, in order to make the most of their education.

In Highland we use a Staged Approach to supporting children and young people with additional support needs. This means that if there is concern about a pupils progress the school should carry out a review in partnership with the pupils parents or carers. This review will consider whether it is necessary to offer further support. Sometimes it may be helpful to involve specialist teachers and sometimes the head teacher may suggest consulting the community paediatrician, the educational psychologist or other specialists.

If a parent or carer is concerned about their childs progress in school it is usually best therefore in the first instance to speak to the childs class teacher or the head teacher.

A new Education Law came in to force on November 14th 2005, the Education (Additional Support for Learning) (Scotland) Act. This new law aims to improve and modernise the ways in which Councils identify and respond to the educational needs of all children and young people. It strengthens the rights of pupils to receive any additional educational support which they require. It also places new duties on other services such as NHS Highland to help support the education of children and young people with additional support needs.

The Scottish Executive has prepared a Code of Practice to accompany this new law. The Code of Practice explains the duties which Councils now have and sets out good practice. It emphasises the need for schools and others to work in partnership with parents and carers, and highlights the importance of Individualised Education Planning for pupils with significant Additional Support Needs.

If you would like more information about this change in education law and what it may mean for your child you can contact: your childs school, or CHIP+ ( Children in the Highlands Information Point) telephone 01463 711189, e-mail [email protected] . CHIP+ has produced a series of information sheets for parents about the Act. You can also find information on the Act on the Highland Council Support for Learners website go to the Highland Council website www.highland.gov.uk and then click on Support for Learners in the A-Z Directory of services.

UNIFORM
We have a growing stock of second hand uniform. This could come in handy for P7s going to Edinburgh, etc. Prices are 1 for poloshirts and 2 for sweatshirts. Anyone wishing to purchase an item should contact the office.

SCHOOL BOARD
Thank you to Fiona McKechnie for volunteering to join the School Board. She has now been voted in to fill our final vacancy. However, due to the Mackrell family leaving the area in the near future Mrs Mackrell will be resigning from the Board as of Easter. We will therefore be seeking a parent volunteer to join the school board to replace her. If you are interested, please give your name into the school office.

Copies of School Board minutes are available on the school website and also on the notice board outside the office. The next meeting will be held on Monday, 6 March at 7.00 pm.

PTA NEWS
