George Gunn

For Iain Crichton Smith

Drinking whisky in Stirling
laughing like a burn in spate
you made me remember that I could love
you said "Look at her"
& sitting next to me was my lady
of barley fields
& somehow Scotland had hope then
both old & new
& then I could not imagine a world
with you not in it
but you are gone & the world is still here
& I rub my fingers against the palm
of my beautiful lady of the barley fields
this is your world
Iain Crichton Smith
whisky never tasted so good
as that night in Stirling
