Warkworth Castle

Introduction:

Warkworth Castle

Warkworth is a ruined castle from the late fourteenth century.  The castle has seen the Scots Kings lay siege to it on at least two occasions.  The Percy family acquired it in 1332.  The work on its defences continued throughout the fourteenth century and towards the end the Earl of Northumberland built a new tower.  Pevsner famous for his castle writings has said this was one of the finest castles built by medieval architects.  Others have strongly agreed.
The castle was large enough to house the earl and his family in great comfort and in addition to hold a large body of men as well as supplies to withstand a long siege.  It is considered to be one of the best examples of a castle combining the security aspects and comfort for those living in it.
