Fotheringhay Castle

The castle is in Northamptonshire and is a motte type castle. It dates from the 12th century and was built by Simon de Senlis.
Little is left of the castle which sits on a mound beside the river Nene. Richard III was born here in 1452.
Mary Queen of Scots was executed here in 1587. Not long after her execution the castle fell into disrepair and the material was plundered for use elsewhere. A
plaque to commemorate May was put up in 1913 by a historical society
