Girnieclett Castle, Caithness The evidence for this castle is very slight as far as we can tell.
The site is on the island of Stroma.
The 1872 Ordnance Survey Object Place Name book entry -
A prominent rock covered with pasture a short distance from the island. No trace of any building can be seen or any history as to how it got its name probably because it is a likely spot to build a castle.
The Entry in the Ordnance survey Object Place Names book of 1872 is for Goe of Girnieclett and it says -
A deep broad Goe alongside of the clett of the same name. |
