Sutherland

Welcome to the Sutherland Photographs on Caithness.org.  Why?   Well we go there all the time.  We have to, to get anywhere else.  Not for nothing is Sutherland called Europe's Last Wilderness.  It is a beautiful and rugged area and a contrast to the land beyond the Highlands that is Caithness and before you take the ferry to the islands of Orkney.  The three counties of the north are very different from each other despite their close proximity.   If you are looking for a place to visit then visit the north of Scotland and meet the people of the northern counties.  To get their you will have to pass through Ross-shire another area packed with Scottish history and see Inverness the capital of the Highlands.  A week will never be long enough to see everything of the history, geography and meet the varied communities but however long you have to spend it will be a relaxed and enjoyable stay.

First Minister Alex Salmond Unveils Emigrants Statue At Helmsdale

Today First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond MSP unveiled the "Emigrants" statue at Helmsdale. Alex Salmond said, "Today's unveiling of this remarkable new presence in the Highland environment marks an important moment for Scotland. The impulse to create this statue came from a desire to remember, but also to reconcile; to refelct on the past, but to draw on it for the future's strength. The statue was created by sculptor Gerald Laing for the Clearances Centre that was et up to find a way to commemorate all the people of the Highlands who were forced to leave Scotland.  The flags at the statue represent the countries where the emigrants mainly went - Canada, United States, Australia and New Zealand but there were many who went to other parts of the globe and a united nations flag is also flown.  A large group of people from many places as well as locally gathered for the ceremony. Professor Eric Richards from Flinders University, Adelaide spoke of the international contribution Scots had made to the world.  Eilidh Mackenzie from the Western Isles sang a haunting gaelic song.  another song was contributed by Rod Paterson from Dundee representing Lowland Scots many of whom were also forced to leave their homeland in times of adversity.  Denis MacLeod, Helmsdale formally handed over certificate of ownership to the Helmsdale Community accepted on their behalf by Edward Mackay.  Sutherland Schools Pipe Band then led a procession to the community centre for more music by Feis Chataibh.  Speakers at the centre included First Minister Alex Salmond and Dr Jim Hunter who has written several books on the clearances and Scots abroad.  Guests then offered a superb buffet prepared in Helmsdale.  A very notable day.

Replica of Helmsdale Memorial 'The Emigrants' Heading For Canada
A replica of the 30 foot bronze statue commemorating the Highland Clearances is being cast and shipped to the Canadian City of Winnipeg. 'The Emigrants' memorial in the Sutherland town of Helmsdale was originally cast by Highland foundry Black Isle Bronze in 2003. Founder of Black Isle Bronze, Farquhar Laing (37), received the request for the replica of the three-figure statue from the St Andrew's Society in Winnipeg several months ago. Laing said: "We're delighted with the commission - it's a big piece involving four tonnes of bronze. We're especially pleased to be picking up work from across the Atlantic; there's also a possibility of another replica memorial being commissioned by an organisation in Nova Scotia."

Strathnaver
Strathnaver in Sutherland is a fascinating place to take trip through.  The scenic and almost empty strath offers a lovely day out or longer if you want to spend a few days exploring all of the places.  It is easy to reach from Inverness or Caithness if you happen to be on holiday.  The road is mainly single track and the slower pace is relaxing.  The photos were taken on 10 June 2006 and it was a beautiful and warm sunny day.  No attempt has been made to photograph all of the Strathnaver Trail as we will certainly go back to dip into other parts.

MOTHBALLED HIGHLAND SCHOOL REOPENS
A remote Highland primary school, which was mothballed in October 2002 following a drop in the school role to just one pupil, reopened on Tuesday 16th August.  Altnaharra Primary School, in Sutherland opened for the new school session with three pupils in the primary school - Tiegan Johnstone (4 years) – Primary 1; Chloe Murphy (7) – P3; and Etienne Murphy (10) – P 6; as well as two pupils in the nursery class – Christina Bakker (3) and Ryan Johnstone (3).  The decision to reopen the school followed a request from the community for the Council to re-assess educational provision.

Landscapes Of Sutherland Launch
Wednesday 4 May 2005 SNH Golspie

A new range of promotional material, featuring the landscapes of Sutherland, will be launched in Golspie next Wednesday (4th May). The full colour posters, postcards and schools activity packs have been produced by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) to raise awareness of the different types of landscapes in the county.

The poster and postcards include quotes from people, including a prominent councillor and a young schoolgirl, on how they feel about their landscapes. The schools activity pack provides guidance on fieldwork relating to landscape, and pointers on how to identify key landscape features. It also invites feedback from children on what they think about their landscapes. Gaelic versions of the postcard set have also been produced.

The package will be launched at the Open Evening event being held by the North Areas Board of SNH at the Sutherland Arms Hotel in Golspie, which begins at 7.30 p.m, with a short talk on the landscapes of Sutherland. There will also be open discussion about the work of SNH in North Highland and all are welcome.

SNH area manager in North Highland, Lesley Cranna, said: "We are very pleased to be launching this new range of material that will promote the Sutherland landscapes which are an important part of our natural heritage. We have sought to reflect the relationship that people have with their landscape, by including the thoughts of four very different Sutherland individuals. I hope people will come along to the launch and perhaps discover a corner of Sutherland which is new to them. Everyone can take away a poster which can be used to promote Sutherland to our visitors, or simply to brighten a wall with our amazing range of landscapes."

The posters and postcards will be available free from SNH in Golspie and Ullapool, while copies will be sent out to local schools along with the schools activity pack.

SCOTLAND'S FIRST EUROPEAN GEOPARK AWARDED
The North West of the Highlands is the first area of Scotland to be awarded UNESCO-endorsed European Geopark status following an announcement made this morning in Sicily during the European Geoparks Networks annual meeting. Geopark status has been awarded to the area which encompasses parts of Wester Ross and the whole of North West Sutherland on the basis of its outstanding geology and landscape, the strength of its partnership approach to sustainable economic development and its existing geological interpretation facilities.  Stretching from Coigach in Wester Ross to Cape Wrath and Loch Eriboll in the north, this 2000 square km area takes in some of the finest mountain and coastal landscapes in Britain and contains a wealth of classic geological localities.
