Peatlands - Caithness & Sutherland
A Unique Scottish Landscape Nearly a million acres of peat and boglands in Caithness and Sutherland make it the largest such habitat in Europe. In recent years the area is often referred to as the Flow Country. The area has populations of many rare and shy birds. The area has one of the lowest population densities in Europe and is often called "Europe's Last Wilderness". The Peatlands are next to other contrasting landscapes of the northern coast and mountains of Sutherland. The area has thousands of pools, lochans, lochs streams and rivers supplied by the wet climate. Wild life abounds in the area with everything from marine, insects, birds and mammals.
