SAC Disease Surveillance Centre
Up-graded facilities at
SACs Disease Surveillance Centre in Thurso were
officially opened by Lord Maclennan of Rogart in April 2004. This SEERAD-supported
development provides better handling capability for large animals and
improved resources for the diagnosis and surveillance of farm animal
diseases in Sutherland, Caithness, Orkney and Shetland. One of eight
Disease Surveillance Centres operated by SAC throughout Scotland, the
Thurso centre serves seven veterinary practices in the region which are
responsible for more than 300,000 cattle and 1,100,000 sheep on 5,200
agricultural holdings. It also supports the small number of pig farmers in
the area and handles samples from domestic animals and more exotic species
such as llamas and ostrich.
