St Mary's Chapel

Map          Churches         A-Z of Caithness Places
The chapel at Crosskirk is thought to be about 12th century and is one of the oldest church buildings in Caithness.  It stands in a walled burial ground overlooking the bay at Crosskirk.
The main doorway is thought to be a more modern addition whilst the other entrances are original.  there a good number of gravestones around the chapel and many of the inscriptions are still very clear.
Access to the chapel is by walking about three quarters of a mile across farmland.  It is in a beautiful setting overlooking the sea and surrounding countryside.
